Net Billing Setup & Support in Edmonton
Boreal Energy Solutions
At Boreal Energy Solutions, we handle the utility side of every system we install. Alberta uses net billing for home solar, not net metering. It works differently from what many homeowners expect, and it affects how a system should be sized and which electricity plan makes sense. We also help homeowners understand their net billing statements after the system is running.
Under net billing, when your panels produce more than your home is using, the surplus goes to the grid and your retailer credits it on your bill. When your home needs more than your panels produce (at night, on cloudy days and through the winter) you buy power from the grid as usual. The grid is not a battery: exported and imported electricity are measured separately and valued differently, as explained below.
Our team at Boreal Energy Solutions has worked with utilities across Alberta since 2018. From system design and application processing to inspections and energy monitoring, we handle the details so the process is smooth for you.
Your Expert Partner in Seamless
Solar Utility Interconnection
Connecting your home’s energy system to the grid requires careful planning, accurate documentation, and a strong understanding of utility regulations. Boreal Energy Solutions proudly serves as a trusted partner for homeowners, making sure your solar installation meets Alberta’s standards and is connected correctly.
Whether you are upgrading your home’s energy infrastructure or installing a brand-new system, we coordinate with EPCOR or FortisAlberta and your electricity retailer so your system is connected and your exports are credited correctly. This includes evaluating your wiring configuration, assessing residential electrical safety, and arranging the installation of bi-directional meters necessary for tracking exported electricity.
With a strong understanding of Alberta’s grid requirements, our team handles:
-
Single-line diagrams and system documentation
-
Safety and regulatory compliance checks
-
Interconnection agreements
-
Inverter settings for grid compliance
-
Utility-side communication
-
Post-installation verification
-
Final energy export activation
This holistic approach ensures that your solar energy system functions efficiently from the moment it goes online.
EPCOR Interconnection Process for Edmonton Residents
For those living in Edmonton city limits, EPCOR is the wire owner and approves solar interconnections. Boreal Energy Solutions completes the steps on your behalf.
How EPCOR’s Process Works
1. Micro-Generation Application
We prepare and submit the micro-generation application and supporting documents, including:
-
System capacity
-
Inverter details
-
Wiring diagrams
-
Installation schematics
-
Power output calculations
EPCOR reviews the application to confirm the system meets its interconnection requirements.
2. Meter Assessment
EPCOR determines whether your home needs a bi-directional meter, which records imported and exported electricity separately. This step is essential to activate net billing credits.
3. Inspection & Safety Check
Once installation is complete, the electrical permit is closed with a safety codes inspection, which checks:
-
Code compliance
-
Equipment safety
-
Proper inverter operation
-
System grounding
-
Grid integration
4. Net Billing Activation
Once EPCOR approves the connection and your meter is in place, your retailer begins crediting exported electricity on your bill.
We track each step and tell you where your application stands.

How Net Billing Works in Alberta
Your bi-directional meter records the electricity you import and the electricity you export separately, and the two are valued differently.
What That Means on Your Bill
Each kWh you export is credited at your retailer’s energy rate. Each kWh you import is billed at your energy rate plus per-kWh delivery charges, and exports don’t earn those delivery charges back. That’s why solar you use directly in your home is usually worth more than solar you export.
In summer, most systems export more than they import, and the credit balance carries forward on your account. In winter, production drops and you import more. Carried-forward credits reduce those later bills, but because exports are valued at the energy rate only, a system that exports as many kWh as you import over a year will not zero out your bill.
Your electricity plan matters:
-
Some retailers offer a higher export rate in summer
-
Some let you switch to a lower-cost plan in winter
-
Rates and switching rules change, so check current terms
-
We use your actual plan in your Solar Savings Report
We’ll help you read your statements and choose a plan that fits how your system produces.
